Have been enjoying the archive and forum since I discovered it recently. The bus came by and I got on for the east coast tour of '79. Then a long time to be gone and I didn't see them again until the late 80s Omni shows.

I've been fascinated by the Days Between, which as far as I can tell they began playing around '93, a song I never heard them do. It seems incredibly poignant, seeing it was played in sets with So Many Roads, Brokedown Palace, Black Muddy River, etc, such as http://www.archive.org/details/gd1993-12-19.sbd.miller.91963.sbeok.flac16

I'd appreciate some thoughts on what you think are some especially good Days Between.

This song is an acquired taste. It took me awhile to really appreciate it. Try this version from Shoreline coming out of space and also take a listen to the So many Roads. A monster to say the least.

Also, there is a version from Nassua Coliseum that is great. I heard it on a local radio show years ago and it was very powerful. Problem is I don't know if it was 93 or 94 since they played it both years.

Now THAT'S a song...(not meaning to be snarky or anything...SCB would've said it if he'd been here).

The intro has that finger-picking, eerie quality.... otherwise it's apples & oranges. (and thanks Tell! I've answered for you enough times, lol) :D

I actually wouldn't know...pathetic, eh? Oh, of course, for you answering for me, with my age, it's good to know someone can fill in while I am away, asleep on the can, or dozing on the couch...

I think this the "Days Between" where Jerry really truly nails it.

I'm a day late, so what..........

For me it has to be 12/19/94.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd94-12-19.sbd.vernon.20712.sbeok.shnf

I'll admit, part of the allure is that this was my last show. It was also the only show my wife ever went to with me.

As Jerry started singing you could hear the the years of accumulated pain and emotion in his voice. And he poured every minute of what he had been through into the song that night. Call me crazy, but it listening to the stream, it seems as if everyone else was playing very subdued knowing that Jer couldn't quite get the vocals there without their help.

I will never forget what my wife told me that night as the song ended.....

She turned and whispered to me, "My God, he's dying on stage, and he knows it."

Indeed, "the days grow dark and mean."

first so many roads 2/22/92 - first days between one year later, the day after the first lazy river road

imo all Hunter attempts to rekindle his kindred spirit - but mostly to no avail.

" imo all Hunter attempts to rekindle his kindred spirit - but mostly to no avail. "

everybody thinks I'm nuts but I say their unfinished last album could have been one of their best in a long time. Certainly the strongst Jerry stuff since...?

Built to Last - horrible I thought. I don't like any of those songs even live ( except Victim )

In the Dark - Touch, too over played to give an otherwise good song an impartial review, West LA - can get hot but it is kind of basically just a reworked Althea, Push Comes to Shove - total throw away, Black Muddy River - eh

Go To Heaven - Althea - one of their all time great songs no question about it, rest of the Jerry tunes?

Shakedown - ok two great Jerry tunes on that one even if the album is over produced

Days Between, So Many Roads, and Lazy River are all really good melancholy tunes that conjure up some great imagery. At least imo

I'm in the minority that thinks Black Muddy River was one of the better latter era tunes. I don't why, but it often worked for me (perhaps because I was high as a kite first time i heard it and it did things for me).

Put me down for Black Muddy River as well. I liked it in the pre drums slot. Thought it worked well there.

I'm with you guys, I actually like Black Muddy River a lot. It was a bit overplayed in 87-88 but the album had just come out so it's kinda to be expected. As for Push Comes to Shove not my favorite tune but not overly played either and not a bad song to throw in the mix every once in a while.

the jerry [GD] comeback show - touch, candyman and black muddy river were all very emotional (as was the whole damn night and scene).

Of course, had they done that last album, Jerry would've probably wanted to put "Liberty" on it as well... which I see no one mentioned. And there's a good reason, too!

Liberty isn't my choice for something to listen to BUT I love the message. The whole don't tread on me thing which is one of the main things I love about the band - all the best attributes of America

You know what makes the line between "me" and "them" so apparent? I literally do not know any of the songs you guys are talking about, cept Althea (which I like) and Touch, cause of the radio.

Amazing really--not being negative or "clique-Era-esque" or whatever...

Just amazing the band did so much, and I really don't know squat about the last 15 yrs. Really.

A fave of mine that I recently learned on Guitar - I'm trying to work on a solid solo acoustic arrangement for this tune. But I do love Days Between, So Many Roads, take or leave LRR. I truly dig West LA, Eugene in 1990 sports a phenominal version (sorry don't know exact date, think it was June). There are a couple Sweet Pushes out there, I always liked hearing it live. Good description by Whirlwind as a kick-ass little Jerry Tune!!!
